My first trip to Tokyo was a fantastic experience and this was one of my first and favorite stops. Located in Shinjuku near the train station, the small alley crammed with bars and restaurants is a nostalgic trip to post-war Japan. Omoide Yokocho, nicknamed “Piss Alley” in the 1940’s (there were no restrooms in the alley), was a market and drinking area. The buildingsĀ burnt down in 1999 but it was rebuilt, with restrooms, and renamed “Memory Lane”. It is wonderfully evocative, smokey and bustling at night, a memory of bygone era hidden between the skyscrapers of Shinjuku.
